As a personal trainer and fitness enthusiast, I am always looking for the next challenge that I can overcome. Last year I made the decision to enter into a bikini fitness competition because I knew that it would challenge me both mentally and physically. When I first began this process, I knew that it was going to be difficult and would require lots of dedication, but I was never prepared for what I had gotten myself into.
Not only was the training much more focused than I had previously done, my nutrition was strict, and the training was demanding on the body. Often times I found myself struggling just to make it through my work day. When I was only three weeks in, I suddenly realized that the biggest challenge wouldn't be the workouts, or the meal plan, but it would be to overcome the mental battles that I faced everyday.
Like many others, sometimes just making into the gym can be a struggle. The little voice in your mind can suddenly start screaming at you, especially when you are fatigued or under a lot of stress. Work, kids, family and school are just some of the different things people try and balance while sticking to their workout schedule. For me, the toughest part was making sure I pushed myself as hard as I could while I was in the gym. As a trainer, it's my job to drown out that negative voice inside my client's head that says "this is to hard, I can't, just quit".
For me, when I was in the middle of my workouts, exhausted and hurting, the easiest thing to do would be to quit. Everyone would understand. But for me, that wasn't an option. I told myself I wanted to see just how disciplined, dedicated, and mentally strong I was. Quitting wasn't a choice. Pushing harder, staying strong, and breaking down those mental barriers were the only options.
Now I stand here, four weeks until my third competition and it hasn't gotten any easier. Each day is a new battle and each day is a new chance to make myself proud. My goal in all of this, is to be able to help the people I come in contact with break down their own mental barriers and see how truly strong and capable they really are. The moment we learn to get out of our own way, is the moment that we unleash our true potential.
The first step in achieving this, is to believe it.
